Welcome to my hobby chemistry site.
I've created this site really as a sort of electronic notebook for me to store the details of my chemistry exploits, their results, and to enable me to share my activities with those that are interested.
Chemistry & Me
Chemistry is something that I’ve had a keen interest in since I started secondary school, but only recently have I had the opportunity to actually start to set-up a small home lab and have a go. Whilst I enjoyed chemistry at school, I have forgotten most of what I learnt and at the ripe old age of… well, mind your own business… so I’ve decided to go back to the beginning and start again.
Health Warning
Chemistry can be a dangerous activity if you aren’t carful. If you don’t know what you’re doing then I suggest you find out. Read a book, find somebody who can help, or find some software and experiment in a virtual lab where it’s safe. For me though, chemistry is like scuba diving; nice to read about and look at the pretty pictures, but you really have to get stuck in and have-a-go.
Chemistry used to be taught in schools and you could buy chemistry sets with real chemicals and glass test tubes. You got a spirit burner and made smelly stink bomb mixtures or clouds of purple smoke. Alas, not any more. Chemistry sets are now branded as safe and don’t contain anything that may injure you. In fact, the most harm a modern chemistry set can do to you is the damage to your wallet. As for teaching in schools, health and safety gone berserk usually means that chemistry lessons are either all theory, or watching the teacher do all the cool stuff.
As soon as I can get around to it, I’ll write a page dedicated to safety.
That’s it… I’m not going to mention safety anymore… so, last time, reader beware!!
